How would you describe your company culture?

Fun, creative, supportive.

How do you bring out the best in your staff?

By giving everyone a chance to get their ideas on screen. We promote genuine collaboration within teams and put the ‘idea’ at the heart of everything we do. We develop key staff over many years so they rise through the ranks with us. We give individuals and teams independence – we do not micro-manage them.

We also like to create a culture that encourages conversation so people are not afraid to speak up. We hire staff who are good people. No shouters please.

How have you improved the working environment and practices – and what future improvements are planned?

We created a management team that is geared towards supporting the staff and holding regular company events. We have also redecorated the office in a way that reflects the company culture.

There are regular staff events, including a bake-off competition, a summer boat party, a charity cake sale, a Christmas raffle and screenings of new shows.

Impromptu fun and nonsense are encouraged.

Our ambitions now are to increase the diversity of the programme types we produce and the staff who make them; and to provide training opportunities for key freelance staff to develop their careers with us.

What are the essential qualities of a good work environment?

Laughter, good conversation and respect for those you work with. Production teams should have distinct work areas and individual cultures to create unique TV programmes.

Extra attention is necessary to look after staff if they are working above and beyond, such as providing dinner and cars home for those working late.
