Ball will contain sensor that transmits the ball’s position and the moment of each contact
LaLiga is rolling out a connnected ball across all of its competitions.
From the 2026/27 season, LaLiga’s balls will contain a sensor that continuously transmits the ball’s position and the moment of each contact.
This will be used to develop xBall, a new data layer that hopes to enhance the broadcast, digital experiences and match analysis of LaLiga matches, that will allow content to show the exact speed of shots, the spin applied to the ball or the trajectory of certain key moments. This will be compatible with LALIGA’s international broadcast signal, digital products and future ‘second-screen’ experiences, and will be rolled out progressively following the first few matchdays.
The technology will also assist with VAR decisions, and the initiative has been created by LaLiga, the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), ball manufacturer Puma and real-time tracking tech company Kinexon.
Validation tests and blind trials carried out with players have confirmed that there is no perceptible difference between a standard match ball and one fitted with sensors in terms of feel, trajectory, weight, balance or the overall playing experience.
