Sony has revealed an update for its PTZ cameras that will allows them to auto track basketball games.

Expected to be available from April, the update is for PTZ Auto Framing cameras with built-in AI analytics - the SRG-A40/A12 V4.0 and BRC-AM7 V3.0. There are plans to add more sports after basketball in the future.

It also includes a live view overlay for tracking range and fixed angle position, and can register the faces of players for close-up framing. The technology is currently designed for use by educational organisations and lower-level sport federations, and has already been used by schools in Japan.

Norbert Paquet, head of live production solutions at Sony, said: “Over the course of the last 12 months there has been a marked trend towards professionalising audio and video production for content creators outside of the traditional broadcast sector, whether it’s for streaming live events, creating high-impact commercial content, producing engaging training materials or podcasts. They are recognising that it’s such a powerful way of elevating their brand and differentiating themselves within the market.”
