“A high concept idea like this really needs better production values, sharper writing and more thought”

The Curfew

“Adapted from Jayne Cowie’s 2022 novel, After Dark, this groans forlornly under the weight of its gimmicky conceit. A high concept idea like this really needs better production values, sharper writing and more thought. If male behaviour has become this appalling and dangerous, how was the measure ever introduced? With male consent? On screen we see little more than a few protests from a handful of angry blokes outside a tagging centre, although Jeremy Vine and Times Radio’s Geoff Norcott gamely deliver phone-in show cameos designed to convince us that it has at least become a national talking point.”
Ben Dowell, The Times

“Don’t go outside, lads. Don’t go to the pub, walk the dog or work the nightshift. While the ladies are free, like vampires, to roam till dawn, all men must stay indoors, by law. My first thought was: That’s absurd. It could never happen — a police regime compelling all men to stay inside from 7pm to 7am, on pains of a two-year jail sentence? The British would never accept it… would we?”

Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Netflix

“Netflix has turned out quite a few documentaries lately in which the stars think they are coming across well but are actually doing themselves no favours, including Simon Cowell and Victoria Beckham. Banks can join the list. Directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan know how to frame a villain – Sivan’s credits include a film about Osama Bin Laden. “You were making good TV at my expense,” one of the contestants says of the programme. And she’s right. But in the early series, at least it really was good TV.”
