US cable TV outfit United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) has continued its expansion into eastern Europe with the acquisition of Polish pay-TV operator @Entertainment for $887 million (£552.9 million). @Entertainment owns Polish cable TV network Polska Telewizja Kablowa and digital satellite operator Wizja TV. But UPC's bid for its first foothold in Germany through the acquisition of Telecolumbus, the country's second largest cable TV operator with around 1.7 million customers, has proved unsuccessful. Telecolumbus opted instead for the German Deutsche Bank's offer of around $775.8 million (£483.5 million). As of 31 March 1999, UPC had around 3.4 million basic tier pay-TV subscribers across 10 European countries and Israel.
