Media giant Vivendi Universal has bought the US cable TV, film and TV production operation USA Networks for£7bn. The deal combines USA Networks' production division with Hollywood studio Universal's film studio and theme park operations. USA Networks chairman Barry Diller will take on the role of chairman and chief executive at the newly constituted joint-venture production entity, Vivendi Universal Entertainment, which will house US production outfit USA Networks - rebranded as USA Interactive.

Former Channel 4 chief executive Michael Jackson, who left C4 in October to head USA Networks Entertainment Group, becomes chairman and chief executive of Universal Television and USA Films.
