Globe-trotting Palin - who recently announced he would not be making another travel series - picked up the prize for best contribution to television at the Voice of the Listener and Viewer awards yesterday.

In radio the award for best individual contribution went to BBC political editor Marr, who won the television version in 2002.

Radio 4 cleared up in the radio awards, winning best programme for Start The Weekand best new programme for Engineering solutions.

On television, the VLV voted Channel 4's Bremner, Bird and Fortunethe best programme, with BBC2's Venicenamed the best TV newcomer. Tim Marlow won a special award for his arts programmes on Five.
