FremantleMedia, the company behind the X Factor, has acquired a majority stake in a games developer as part of an ongoing strategy to diversify the business.

A week after Endemol announced it is creating a games division, FremantleMedia decided to raise its 29% stake in Canadian video game development company Ludia to an 80% majority.

The Montreal-based firm has been making games based on FremantleMedia titles since 2008, including The Price is Right, Family Feud and Press Your Luck.

It follows a move by the producer/distributor to take a 60% stake in branded entertainment producer Radical Media. It signals further diversification as the RTL-owned firm braces for a challenging year.

Speaking about the Ludia deal, FremantleMedia chief executive Tony Cohen said: “This will increase our expertise and capability in this area, allowing both companies to develop even more successful consumer-facing entertainment across multiple platforms.”

It is thought that the takeover will not affect FremantleMedia’s decision to pick Koch Media’s Deep Silver label to develop the forthcoming X Factor singing console game.
