Broomfield scores Grierson hat trick

Nick Broomfield became the first person to win three Grierson's while Andrew Marr was also among the winners at last night's British Documentary Awards.

Broomfield scooped the gong for best drama documentary for Battle For Haditha, a film about real-life violence and retribution in Iraq.

Former BBC political editor Marr won best documentary series for his BBC2 show Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain.

Grant Gee's Joy Division won the best cinema documentary award, while most entertaining documentary went to Weijun Chen's Please Vote For Me.

Elsewhere, newcomer Adam Lavis scooped an unprecedented two awards - the Bloomberg best newcomer and best arts documentary - for his debut film Here's Johnny, about the surreal world of graphic artist Johnny Hicklenton and his fight against multiple sclerosis.

The awards took place at the Royal Institution in London, hosted by Sue Perkins and Giles Coren.
