Toast of London creator Arthur Mathews is developing a BBC sitcom inspired by BBC1 daytime show The Sheriffs Are Coming.

Mathews also co-created Father Ted and his other credits include Big Train, Brass Eye and The Catherine Tate Show.

He is working on the project about well-intentioned bailiffs with Peter Bowden and Thom Phipps, the writing duo behind Kayvan Novak’s Julian Assange-inspired BBC4 comedy Asylum.

Sheriffs is in the early stages of development at the BBC’s in-house comedy unit, which is overseen by former ITV comedy commissioner Myfanwy Moore.

The writers are initially working on a 30-minute pilot.

A source close to the project said it is loosely inspired by Screenchannel Television’s hit BBC1 daytime show The Sheriffs Are Coming, which follows a group of High Court enforcement officers as they collect cash for out-of-pocket consumers.

The show won Best Daytime Programme at the 2014 Broadcast Awards earlier this year and has given rise to an early evening spin-off.

Screenchannel, which also makes Fake Britain, has just made the shortlist for Best Independent Production Company at the 2015 Broadcast Awards.
