The BBC is to give residents of a whole street a lifestyle makeover, with tailored exercise and diet plans, as part of a major campaign on obesity.

The 9 x 60-minute working-titled Fat Nation , to be presented by Matt Allwright, will follow the progress of the residents over eight weeks as they attempt to get fit and lose weight. A team of experts will be based on the street alongside a production village.

The series, which is being funded by BBC Learning and is due to air on BBC1 in September, was developed through the BBC's "watering hole" commissioning initiative, where staff from different parts of the corporation contribute. It will include interactive features, support from the nations and regions and a potential BBC3 spin-off. Virginia Hill will series produce with Lisa Ausden executive producing.

The consumer unit, which is run by Ausden, has also been commissioned to make a 30-minute pilot for a modern That's Life -style show, planned for a 22.30 Friday night slot on BBC1. Presented by Allwright and Nick Knowles, What If? will take a sideways look at topical stories.
