Sara Cox to present daytime format
MGM Alternative is to produce a BBC1 daytime series following professional model makers as they make miniatures to celebrate different personal and cultural events.
Radio 2 presenter Sara Cox will present the eight-part The Marvellous Miniatures Workshop (w/t), in which special models will be commissioned to showcase a range of stories, from emotional and personal family moments to different aspects of British cultural heritage.
The miniaturists will each painstakingly investigate the personal stories behind each request to craft them as accurately and realistically as possible, and MGM Alternative will use microscopic cameras to get up close to the minute details of the crafts.
There will be a big reveal of each item to the individual or family at the end of each episode.
The craft of making miniatures has recently been showcased in More4’s Yeti-produced competition format The Great Big Tiny Design Challenge, which aired for one series in 2022, and the competitive format Best in Miniature from Blue Ant Media in association with CBC. The show, which has run for three series, originally aired on CBC in Canada and is available on Discovery+ in the UK.
The Marvellous Miniatures Workshop was ordered by head of daytime and early peak Rob Unsworth with commissioning editor Rachel Platt and the series producer is Nicki Stoker.
Platt said: “Many of us will remember our first set of building blocks, train set, or dolls house, so what a thrill to have one of those miniature worlds created around your own special memory.
“Combining the nation’s love of model-making with stories that are at once deeply personal and wonderfully relatable, each episode of this genuinely delightful series will be full of emotion, nostalgia - and exceptional skill.”
Senior vice-president of MGM Alternative UK Dom Bird added: “MGM is delighted to be growing our slate of BBC programmes in 2025, with this original new series combining deeply personal stories and incredible craftsmanship with joyous surprises and reveals.
“These perfect replicas will bring back to life those locations that changed and shaped people’s lives, while the models will be small, the heart and joy in this series promises to be huge.”
MGM Alternative is the co-producer of BBC1 hits The Apprentice and Gladiators, as well as Gladiators spin-off Epic Pranks for CBeebies and The Apprentice: You’re Fired for BBC2.
