Sue Johnston and Stephen Graham are to star in a “heartwarming” new BBC1 comedy this Christmas.

Lapland tells the story of the “chaotic” Lewis family, who save all year to visit Father Christmas in his home land on a package holiday.

Channel head Danny Cohen and comedy controller Cheryl Taylor ordered the 90-minute single, which is being produced in-house.

The comedy, which is already started filming, has been written by Olivier Award-winner Michael Wynne.

Director is Catherine Morsehead (Silk, Doctor Who, Ashes to Ashes), producer is Rosemary McGowan and Anne Gilchrist will executive produce.

McGowan said: “Michael Wynne has skilfully brought to life one ordinary family’s chaotic experience of Christmas in a way that will have people all over the country chuckling in recognition. Funny, warm but also moving.”

As well as The Royle Family’s Johnston and Graham (This is England, Boardwalk Empire), the comedy features an ensemble cast including Elizabeth Berrington (Secrets And Lies), William Ash (Waterloo Road), Julie Graham (Survivors), Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat) and Keith Barron (Benidorm).
