US medical comedy drafts in key former cast members for reboot

Disney’s ABC has confirmed it is rebooting hospital comedy Scrubs, 15 years after the show ended its run on the US broadcaster.

The single cam show had been in development since late last year but a straight-to-series order has now been formally made for the 2025/26 season.

Numerous original cast members are attached on the reboot, with Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke joining Zach Braff, whose participation was revealed in May.

Further additions are expected from the original show, which ran for seven seasons on NBC between 2001 and 2008 before switching to ABC for a further two seasons. The show was cancelled in 2010.

Series creator Bill Lawrence is behind the reboot, with Chalke, Faison and Braff joining him as exec producers.

“Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,” said Lawrence.

The original show revolved around day-to-day interactions at the Sacred Heart Hospital, tracking Braff and Faison’s characters (JD and Turk, respectively) through their medical careers.

The logline for the new series reads: “JD and Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time. Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time.

“Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”

Disney’s 20th Television produces with Scrubs alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra confirmed as showrunners and exec producers.

Lawrence, who has an overall deal at Warner Bros TV, has agreed a carve-out deal and will exec produce via his Doozer label with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer.
