Africa and Middle East vice-president of content left as part of recent job cuts

Netflix’s vice-president of content for the Middle East and Africa is among senior execs departing the streamer.

Ben Amadasun had been with Netflix for seven years, initially joining as director of content acquisitions and coproductions before being upped to his current role in 2023.

His exit was part of the departures that hit employees last month, with around 1,000 staff being laid off that included global content chief Bela Bajaria and film boss Dan Lin.

Amadasun had led a steadily expanding slate of shows from Africa, with a slew of programming unveiled at a press showcase in Johannesburg in late September that marked Netflix’s decade in South Africa.

New seasons of franchises including How to Ruin, Seriously Single and Disaster Holiday were unveiled, while Amadasun had also been behind recent hits such as The Polygamist and Umthetho.

The streamer also moved into local versions of formats including Love is Blind: South Africa, as well as upcoming docuseries such as Stars & Vows: Anele And Buzza.

The Amsterdam-based exec’s remit is being taken on by Kaye Ann Williams, director of scripted content for sub-Saharan Africa.

It is understood his exit will not affect Netflix’s local originals strategy in the regions, with greenlights from South Africa totalling around 20 each year.
