LA-based exec tasked with expanding Korean company’s English-language output
South Korea’s CJ ENM has hired Courteney Tarantin to head up scripted television at its US-based operations.
Tarantin becomes vice president of scripted TV at CJ ENM America and is based out of LA, with a remit to curate original English-language shows while also adapting Korean titles.
She will act as creative lead on projects and reports into exec vice president Elsie Choi, who oversees CJ ENM’s English-language output.
Tarantin was most recently vice president of TV at US production outfit Rideback, where she was behind series including Walker for The CW, and its prequel, Walker: Independence, both of which were produced by Rideback and CBS Television Studios.
Tarantin has also had stints at Sony Pictures Television and CAA, with credits on shows including Shut Eye for Hulu and The Last Tycoon for Prime Video.
Choi said Tarantin “brings an exceptional blend of creative instincts, strategic thinking, and deep industry experience to CJ ENM America at a pivotal time in our scripted expansion.”
She continued: “Her track record of championing distinctive voices and delivering compelling series across platforms aligns perfectly with our mission to build global stories that resonate.”
The hire comes as the Korean giant looks to expand its operations overseas, having acquired producer-distributor Fifth Season in 2022.
It is behind hit film Parasite and well-travelled singing format I Can See Your Voice, and recently confirmed plans to spend heavily on content to fuel a new local streamer, with around 20 global projects currently in development.
The company is also working on Apple TV+ show KPOPPED, while its Studio Dragon operation is also looking to produce formats for US and Japanese local markets.
