Disney-owned Marvel is reducing staffing numbers by almost 10% in the US as part of a jobs cut across the organisation.

The move comes as part of recently installed chief exec Josh D’Amaro’s cuts that were unveiled earlier this week and are expected to impact around 1,000 roles in total.

The Marvel cuts will hit both Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios divisions, with US reports putting the figure at around 8% of Marvel’s total workforce.

Roles set to be hit include those involved in TV and film production, as well as back office positions and workers at sports operation ESPN.

The majority of the cuts across the broader Disney organisation have hit its marketing and brand teams.

D’Amaro, who replaced Bob Iger last month, confirmed the cuts in an email to staff on Tuesday.

“Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs,” D’Amaro wrote.

“As a result, we will be eliminating roles in some parts of the company.”

The cuts are the latest to hit Disney, which slashed 7,000 roles in 2023. The company employed north of 230,000 employees as of September across its entire operation.
