It will tell the story of the male orca who was captured in 1979 and subsequently found global fame after appearing in the blockbuster 1993 film Free Willy.

The doc will track controversial efforts to return him to the wild, in a journey that spanned Mexico, the US, Iceland, and Norway.

Exclusive access to never-before-seen archive material and interviews with those who cared for him will feature on the series, which will debut on HBO and become available to stream on HBO Max.

Read said: “I’m delighted to be partnering with HBO and Raw on this rich, complex story about our relationship to the natural world.

“I’m excited to bring some new voices to the screen to tell the story of Keiko’s life and chronicle a remarkable human endeavour by a group sometimes divided over the goal, but united by their good intentions.”

The producer is Maria Drovnenkova, while exec producers for Raw are Dimitri Doganis and Tom Sheahan.
