Canovi, whose hire comes ahead of the streamer’s launch in the country next year, joins from Indiana Production, which is behind shows including Il Gattopardo and Curon for Netflix.

She will lead the development and production of Max’s original scripted series for the Italian market, where its first local scripted original production was recently unveiled.

Portobello is from Marco Bellocchio and will debut on the platform in 2026, with filming already underway in Rome.

In her new role, Canovi will report to Laura Carafoli, senior vice president of content networks and streaming, local productions for Italy and Iberia.

Her team includes Cecilia Penati, who oversees unscripted for Max in Italy, as well as vice presidents of programming Aldo Romersa and Gesualdo Vercio.

Jose Maria Caro was hired earlier this year to oversee scripted originals for Max in Spain, also reporting into Carafoli.

Canovi, meanwhile, previously led editorial strategy and development of films and series at Indiana, which is based out of Rome and Milan.

Its shows include Sei nell’Anima for Netflix, Unwanted for Sky Studios, and Vostro Onore for RAI Fiction, with Canovia’s remit including oversight of the entire production process from initial development to delivery.

She previously worked at fellow Italian producer Cattleya and was involved in the development and production of titles such as Gomorra, Masantonio, Suburra, Zero Zero Zero, and L’Immortale.
