Modern Family team to adapt Mammoth for Fox

The team behind Modern Family is to adapt BBC2 comedy Mammoth for Fox.

Christopher Lloyd and Danny Zuker, co-creator and exec producer of Modern Family, will write, showrun and exec produce the adaptation, which will be co-produced by BBC Studios LA and Fox Entertainment Studios.

The original was created by and stars Welsh comedian Mike Bubbins, who will also serve as an exec producer on the US version, alongside BBCS’ Mark Linsey and Angie Stephenson.

The comedy will follow Coach Tony Mammoth, a macho high school gym teacher who is buried in a ski avalanche in 1983 but thawed out 40 years later and forced to navigate a changed world.

Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn called it “a wildly original comedy with huge laughs, deep heart, and characters everyone will relate to, whether they like it or not”.

Lloyd, who has also previously showrun Frasier, said: “Tony Mammoth genuinely believes he mastered manhood the first time around, making his new reality the ultimate wakeup call and greatest challenge in an otherwise flawless life.

“He’s charming, wildly self-assured, hopelessly out of step and, despite his many blind spots, impossible not to root for.”

Zuker added: “We love his shameless confidence, his fascination with a world he barely recognises, and the big heart underneath it all.”

The series is slated to land in 2027/28.

Production on the third run of the original UK version, which is set and filmed in Cardiff, is ongoing.
