Netflix has started production on its latest Korean show, this time a scripted series that draws inspiration from an old Korean folktale.

The Rat (w/t) is from CJES Studio, H.House, and Kakao Entertainment, with stars Ryu Jun-yeol and Sul Kyung-gu among the cast

The show is based on Kakao Entertainment’s webtoon, Field Mouse, by ludovico, which reimagines a local story that explores what happens when a rat transforms into a human by consuming clipped fingernails.

The series is described as a “chilling thriller about a reclusive novelist forming an unlikely alliance with a loan shark - who once chased him down - to hunt the mysterious ‘Rat’ who’s stolen everything from him.”

Kim Hong-sun, who has worked on shows including Dear Hongrang and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, is attached to direct, with A Model Family’s Lee Jae-on writing.

Kakao Entertainment has previously adapted webtoons and web novels for TV with titles such as Karma, Call It Love, and Business Proposal.

Netflix has been ramping up its spend on Korean content over the past five years, as it looks to double-down on the success of shows such as Squid Game.

The streamer committed to spend more than $500m on Korean content in 2021, before outlining bigger plans to invest $2.5bn on K-dramas and movies from the country between 2024 and 2028.
