Supernova Genesis among newly unveiled Mexican slate that includes shows from CBS Studios and Banijay

Netflix’s live programming strategy is expanding into Mexico, with a sport and music series among a stack of local commissions in the country.

Supernova Genesis will feature boxing matches between influencers and celebrities, as well as performances by musicians, and will mark the first time Netflix has streamed an event live from LatAm.

The show comes in the same week that Netflix launched its first live voting talent format with US-focused Star Search and is part of a broader push into live streaming, designed to tap into ad revenues.

Other shows unveiled at a Mexico City launch event on Thursday include a local iteration of Korean format Physical 100, with the Mexican version in the works from Banijay’s Endemol Shine Boomdog.

CBS Studios has partnered with local player TIS Estudios on upcoming legal drama La Le De Alicia (Alicia’s Law), while fellow scripted series El Otro Padre (The Other Father) is from Mar Abierto and explores a woman who must face secrets from her past.

A feature doc tracking boxer Canelo Álvarez as he prepares to fight Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin is being produced by Unanimous Media and difected by Juan Camil Cruz, while on the feature side Netflix revealed traffic cop drama La Captura.

Carolina Leconte, vice president of content in Mexico and regional licensing, said the new shows “explore new perspectives and genres, and are driven by the creativity and passion of the best Mexican talent”.

She added: “From epic dramas to comedies, adventures, action, and the best in live entertainment, these titles not only reflect our culture but also celebrate who we are and leave their mark while building collective memory.”
