Japan’s Nippon TV has launched a Global Strategy division that will work in tandem with the company’s sales arm and be led by a former Hulu exec.

The nascent unit will target long-term growth initiatives across IP development, technology, strategic partnerships, and region-specific market strategies. It will particularly focus on expanding the scale of unscripted production label Gyokuro Studio, and AiDi, Nippon TV’s proprietary AI-software.

Kazuo Takaya, who was Hulu Japan president between 2023 and 2026, has been appointed president of Global Strategy, which will work in parallel with Nippon’s Content Business division to expand international reach.

Content Business will continue to lead worldwide content sales, format remakes, and global distribution, with Satoru Hiramatsu upped to become executive vice president of Content Business.

Hiramatsu was previously MD of the division and will report directly to Tadafumi Shimomura, president of Content Business.

“Global business is becoming an increasingly important driver of Nippon TV’s future growth,” said Kazuo Takaya, president of Global Strategy. “Leveraging our strengths as a global content company, we aim to explore and drive business opportunities worldwide across a diverse range of areas and initiatives.”

Hiramatsu added: “Nippon TV’s core strength lies in our expansive library of high-quality content, driven by the exceptional creativity of our in-house creators.

“Building on the strong foundation of enduring hits like Mother and Old Enough!, we are continuing this momentum with a fresh lineup of new formats, drama series, and variety shows this year.”
