Further series to debut on Fox Nation in the US as debut run expands internationally
Nutopia docudrama Jesus: Crown of Thorns has landed a double series order for Fox Nation in the US as it expands its franchise internationally.
The first series of the Fox Nation original presents Jesus’ life as a gritty political thriller, with insight from experts and faith leaders to reimagine the story of Jesus. Set in first century Judea, it portrayed Jesus’s rise as a revolutionary figure.
Series two will explore his ministry and the social unrest it sparked, while the third and final run will depict the final week of Jesus’s life in Jerusalem, followed by his crucifixion and resurrection.
Jesus: Crown of Thorns is directed by Hereward Pelling with Alex Dwiar as showrunner. Jane Root and Ben Goold serve as executive producers for Nutopia.
Goold said: “Telling Jesus’s story in a bold way across a franchise is a rare creative opportunity. The world he lived in was gritty and complex – something we think will really connect with today’s audience.”
As well as securing two further series, distributor All3Media International has secured several deals for the debut series including Hearst Networks Africa for pan-territory rights on the continent and a multi-territory acquisition by RTL covering Germany, Austria, German-speaking Lichtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
The specialist documentary channel DOX TV has also picked up the series for various Balkan territories including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Slovenia.
SVT in Sweden, RTP in Portugal, DR in Denmark and Michal Winnicki Entertainment in Poland have also acquired the docudrama, and Now TV has secured digital rights for Hong Kong and Macau.
All3Media International’s senior vice-president of unscripted content Rachel Job said the series had secured “such a strong selection of initial deals” ahead of its series recommissions.
“We knew a project that brought its team’s innovative storytelling to such a globally relevant topic would appeal to many broadcasters,” she added.
The deal forms part of All3Media International’s ongoing partnership with Nutopia, which also includes A World of Calm, Guiltology and The Jesus Code in its portfolio.
