PBS returns to sustainable food series Hope In the Water

PBS has ordered a second series of the Emmy-nominated nature documentary Hope In the Water from chef Andrew Zimmern.  

Produced via Zimmern’s indie Intuitive Content, the series will again explore how innovative fish and seaweed farming can feed the planet while healing the oceans.

Actor and environmental enthusiast Shailene Woodley returns to present, alongside Zimmern and chef Kristen Kish.

Production has begun on the three-parter, which is set to land next year.

Woodley said: “Continuing this journey with the series feels deeply meaningful, especially as the need for sustainable change grows more urgent. I’m honored to continue to build on the momentum and to keep sharing stories that inspire hope and action for our planet.” 

The docuseries is showrun by Michele Wallin with exec producer Patrick Weiland, executive advisor David E. Kelley and director Patrick McMahill. Blue foods experts Jennifer Bushman and Jill Kauffman Johnson serve as impact producers and Diana El-Osta is the executive-in-charge for PBS.  

Kelley said: “Hope In the Water sets out to tell hopeful, solution-driven stories about the future of our oceans and our food. It’s evident that these stories resonate, and we’re excited to continue the journey with PBS - exploring even more of the people and ideas helping to shape a more sustainable future.  

Production funding was provided by the Builders Vision and the Walton Family Foundation. 

The first series, which aired in 2024, was nominated for an Outstanding Science and Technology Coverage Emmy.
