Queen Silvia will become available on Prime Video and Sat.1 in Germany

Prime Video in Germany and commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 are working together on a drama tracking the unlikely relationship immortalised in ABBA hit song Dancing Queen.

Queen Silvia (w/t) explores the chance encounter between German-Brazilian interpreter Silvia Sommerlath and Sweden’s young Crown Prince Carl Gustaf at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

The duo eventually married, with the relationship recorded in ABBA’s Dancing Queen, which was first performed during the wedding celebrations in 1976.

The six-hour drama is jointly produced by Pyjama Pictures (Germany) and Unlimited Stories (Sweden) for Prime Video in the DACH region and the Nordic countries, as well as for Sat.1 in Germany. Windowing details have not been revealed.

Beta Film is distributing, with shooting underway in Munich, Berlin, and Stockholm. Silvia is portrayed by German actress Alicia von Rittberg (Call My Agent! Berlin), while Swedish actor Edvin Endre (Eddie the Eagle) takes the role of Carl Gustaf.

Justus Riesenkampff, exec vice-president of Nordics & Benelux at Beta Film, said the show “tells the unique story of two people who come from completely different worlds.”

Riesenkampff added: “What begins as a flirtation soon turns into an impossible love. Set between Munich, Stockholm, and the French Riviera, and brought to life with a lavish cast and stunning costumes, the series promises to be a must-see for audiences around the globe.”

Carsten Kelber, showrunner and producer at Pyjama Pictures, said putting “the relationship in focus and telling it in a grown-up way is magical and modern at the same time.”

The series is directed by Miguel Alexandre (Sisi), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Lisa Hofer (Black Island) and Pauline Wolff (Stockholm Requiem).
