Apple TV+ drama’s second series receives 27 nods while Netflix’s UK hit lands more than a dozen

Severance

Severance

The second season of Apple TV+ show Severance leads the pack on 27 nods as the TV Academy’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, while UK drama Adolescence has secured 13 nominations for Netflix.

In a strong outing for new shows, favourites heading into Tuesday’s announcements included HBO Max’s The Penguin, which earned 24 nods, along with the first season of Apple TV+ comedy The Studio and the third season of HBO Max’s The White Lotus, both of which landed 23 nominations each.

Adolescence

Adolescence

In fact, The Studio tied the record set by The Bear last year for the most nominations in a single year in the comedy category, while HBO Max enjoyed a company-record 142 nods across its entries.

Among the 13 nods for Netflix’s UK phenomenon Adolescence was outstanding limited or anthology series. There was also recognition for Philip Barantini and Jack Thorne in the directing and writing contests, and love for the actors led by triple threat Stephen Graham (lead actor, co-writing, producing), breakout Owen Cooper – who at 15 is the youngest nominee in the history of the category – Erin Doherty, Christine Tremarco, and Ashley Walters.

Adolescence and The Penguin compete in a limited or anthology series category with Netflix’s Black MirrorMonsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, and FX’s Dying For Sex.

It was a big day for Apple TV+ with 79 nominations, the best yet for the relatively young company. The atmospheric mystery sci-fi Severance is in contention for, among others, best drama, writing, directing for co-creator Ben Stiller, and drew acting recognition for Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, and Patricia Arquette.

Severance is arguably the frontrunner for drama series. Season One earned 14 nominations and two wins for main title design and score. Three years on and voters may be trying to make up for that.

Yet the return to Lumon Industries finds itself in a tough contest that brings HBO Max’s The White Lotus, the second season of The Last Of Us, which earned 16 nods, and new arrival The Pitt, on 13. Andor from Disney+ garnered 14. Rounding out the pack are Netflix’s second season of The Diplomat, Hulu’s new show Paradise, and the fourth lap of Slow Horses on Apple TV+.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror

The fourth season of HBO Max’s Hacks garnered 14 nominations and the show starring nominees Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder is the current holder of the comedy series award. Going against it are sparkling new arrival The Studio and Apple stablemate Shrinking, former winner The Bear from FX, Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, new Netflix show Nobody Wants This, and the final season of FX’s What We Do In The Shadows.

The Studio co-creator Seth Rogen earned three nods for performance, writing and directing the Apple TV+ hit. There was a first Emmy acting recognition for Harrison Ford for Shrinking, while Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, and Anthony Mackie from The Studio comprised five of the six nominees in the guest acting in a comedy series category. The other was Jon Bernthal for The Bear.

The second season of Netflix’s Squid Game came away empty-handed after the first season won six Emmys, and there was a solitary nod for the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale in the form of guest performance category nominee Cherry Jones.

The dystopian show’s star Elisabeth Moss, who won two Emmys for acting and producing the best drama in 2017, was regarded as a shoo-in for a dramatic lead actress nod before Tuesday. Sharon Horgan with the second season of Bad Sisters looks to have taken her place.

By company, HBO Max led the way across all categories. Besides The Penguin, The White Lotus, Hacks, The Last Of Us, and The Pitt, the streamer garnered six nominations for House Of The Dragon. Disney claimed 137 nods and Netflix 120, with Apple TV+ on 79, and NBCUniversal 72.

Eligible shows must have aired between June 2024 and May 2025. The final round of online voting begins on August 18, and the Emmys ceremony will take place on September 14 in Los Angeles.

Last year, FX period drama Shogun won best drama, Max’s Hacks won best comedy, and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer was named best limited or anthology series.
