California lifeguard series returns more than two decades after original drama ended

Sky in the UK has picked up rights to Fox’s reboot of hit drama Baywatch.
The Southern California-based lifeguard series, which is a co-production by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, will debut exclusively on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK and Ireland in 2027.
The new version of the drama, which is sold internationally by Fremantle, comes 25 years after the original 11-season run ended in 2001, having launched the careers of stars such as David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra and Jason Momoa.
The first season of the reboot runs to 12 episodes and tracks a new cast of lifeguards - still in red swimsuits - as they patrol local beaches and deliver daring rescues.
Stephen Amell leads the reboot, with Jessica Belkin, Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison and Thaddeus LaGrone among cast. In recurring roles, David Chokachi reprises his original role as Cody Madison, while Livvy Dunne portrays Grace. Erika Eleniak will also reprise her original role as Shauni McClain as a guest star.
Lucy Criddle, director of acquisitions & strategic projects at Sky, said the “bold new reimagining will deliver the sun, sea and high-stakes drama audiences know and love, while introducing a dynamic new cast for a new generation of fans.”
“Baywatch is one of the most iconic and globally recognised brands in television, and the excitement surrounding the series reflects its enduring appeal,” said Jamie Lynn, exec vice president of co-production & distribution, EMEA, Fremantle.
“It has an instantly familiar feel while still being made for today’s audiences, offering something for both loyal and new fans.”
Matt Nix (Burn Notice) is showrunner and executive producer alongside executive producers McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto and Mike Horowitz. McG will direct the series premiere episode.
Fox Entertainment Global holds all US distribution rights, while Fremantle manages all international sales.
