He produced the movie adaptation of the Whale Rider novel, which went on to garner global plaudits, and led local production outfit South Pacific Pictures for more than two decades from 1992.

He was also a key force in setting up Sundance Channel in New Zealand, which marked the brand’s first TV operation outside of the US.

Barnett also worked on the New Zealand Film Commission board and was integral to local drama Shortland Street, which went on to travel globally.

New Zealand’s Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA) confirmed Barnett had died on Sunday evening.

It added that Barnett’s “passion for stories that reflect our culture changed the face of New Zealand film and television.”

The New Zealand Film Commission was among numerous others to pay tribute to Barnett, describing him as a “pivotal figure” in the country’s TV and film sector.

“With a career spanning over 50 years, Barney’s enduring legacy is woven into the fabric of screen storytelling in Aotearoa,” its statement added.
