TV series and films make up 48% of all content available on EU streamers, according to study

US shows make up nearly half of all content available on streamers and VoD services in the European Union, according to a report unveiled today.

From the 2,555,304 film titles and individual TV seasons available in 25 European Union countries, 1,214,277 - or 48% - originated in the US, according to the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO) study.

Europe

22% of titles originated from the European Union’s 27 member countries, with 10% from ‘other European’ countries (members of the Council of Europe) and 20% of titles came from outside both the US and Europe.

The report, Film and TV content in TVOD, SVOD and FOD catalogues – 2025 edition, found that US shows were more broadly distributed across streamers than titles that were produced in a European Union country.

While European works account for 46% (91,346) of all individual titles available on streamers across the continent out of a total of 199,613, they represent only 32% of total “presences” (the actual number of times a work appears in various streamer catalogues).

In contrast, US titles represent 33% of individual titles but command the aforementioned 48% of “presences” in VOD catalogues in each country.

The report, which is supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission, also revealed that the share of EU works in catalogues is highest in France (36%), Germany (30%), Italy (28%), and Spain (26%).

The study, authored by Christian Grece, considered hundreds of streamers operating across Europe and is based on data collected in June 2025. For the origin of a title, only the first country of production was considered.
