The film comes four years after BBC Sport’s first documentary on Macclesfield FC’s rebirth
Four years on from BBC Sport’s first documentary on Macclesfield FC, it has released a sequel doc, Robbie Savage: Managing Macclesfield FC.
The documentary follows Macclesfield FC’s players, staff and fans through the 2024/25 season, with the club having previously won back-to-back promotions in 2022 and 2023 before a play-off loss in 2024.
The BBC says the series is “a story that goes beyond football, and the long-time friends [Robbie Savage and club owner Robert Smethurst] open up about how Macclesfield saved Smethurst’s life after struggling with addiction, whilst Savage talks frankly about dealing with the years of abuse he’s faced from the terraces”.
The film focuses on Savage as he attempts to get his team over the line during his debut season in charge.
Robbie Savage: Managing Macclesfield FC is available on BBC iPlayer now and will air on BBC3 on Monday 8 December at 8pm.
