Tour de France 2

Eurosport has reported a large growth in viewers of the Tour de France through its Eurosport app.

The app offers fans with a subscription access to live, ad-free coverage of every stage of the competition, which began on Saturday 26 June and has seen Britain’s Mark Cavendish register two stage wins to close in on Eddy Merckx’s record - he is now on 32 to the Belgian’s 34.

The number of unique video viewers on the app has grown by 28% overall, with particularly large gains in Spain (120%), France (112%), The Netherlands (57%), and Russia (44%). In the UK, 42% more people have tuned in through the platform.

In addition to streaming, Eurosport.com, which features news, digital content and key highlights, and live reporting during each stage, has also seen large growth. Unique users have grown by 177% on the site, with the UK seeing a 412% increase which is only bettered by the Netherlands’ 486%.

Scott Young, SVP content and production at Eurosport, said: “It’s been a remarkable opening three stages of the Tour de France this year with some of the world’s best riders already delivering on the biggest stage while navigating the chaos and crashes we’ve observed on the roads.

“We’re pleased our digital-first strategy is delivering record results and are confident our commitment to content combined with our unique storytelling ability, deep cycling expertise and unrivalled live coverage will continue to drive digital engagement and streaming throughout the next three weeks of the Tour.”
