He’s decided to follow Leicester City in Europe with his sons

BT Sport Champions League

Gary Lineker has decided to step down from presenting BT Sport’s Champions League coverage.

Lineker has been the face of the broadcaster’s Champions League shows since it gained the rights back in 2015, and BT Sport had been aiming to keep him on.

However, the former England international has decided against renewing his deal as he wants to step back from work and enjoy following his club, Leicester City, playing in Europe next season.

It is assumed that he will continue his work with the BBC, where he presents Match Of The Day and live football - as well as occasional non-football shows.

Announcing his decision, Lineker tweeted: “Porto’s mouth-watering all-English final this weekend will be my final Champions League show for BT Sport.

“I’ve loved hosting the best club tournament in world football and I’m genuinely proud of being part of the their truly groundbreaking coverage over the past 6 years.

“I would like to thank BT Sport for their generous renewal offer, but after much thought, I have decided to call it a day. I feel it’s time to do things that I’ve always promised myself I’d do: such as follow Leicester across Europe with my sons (how many opportunities will we have?).

“A big thank you to everyone at BT Sport, both in front of the camera and behind. You’re one hell of a team. It’s been a joy working with you. Well played.”
