It will be the first time it has been used for live golf coverage

The Open golf

Sky Sports is adding a Spidercam for its Open coverage, in what it claims is a first for live golf broadcasting.

The camera will give aerial shots from the 18th green, alongside a number of other innovations. The broadcaster is also adding a moveable stage in the Open Zone, with projected putting lines to replicate real putts from the course; Sportsbox AI to convert swing footage into 3D avatars for detailed analysis; and its SkyScope AR tool, allowing 360° swing breakdowns with lifelike avatars.

The Open gets underway at Royal Portrush on 17 July, with Graeme McDowell joining the Sky Sports punditry team for the first time. He will be joined by Sir Nick Faldo, Dame Laura Davies, Paul McGinley, Rich Beem, Wayne Riley, Iona Stephen, Henni Zuel, and Sarah Stirk. Nick Dougherty will present.
