Channel 4 is piloting a format that is like an updated version of Crimewatch and which will call on viewers and members of the public to contribute their own amateur footage of crime or anti-social behaviour.

Mugshots is being produced by Zodiak Media Group’s RDF Television and will be broadcast in January. It is being tested to see if it has the potential to become a weekly series.

The programme will feature footage captured by the public on mobile phones or personal CCTV.

The producers are aiming to highlight crime and anti-social behaviour, and in some cases plan to name and shame the perpetrators. It may also include live appeals to track down the people in the footage, which will be done in close co-operation with the police.

The show will aim to highlight the use of modern technology to catch criminals by providing examples of stories where the use of amateur footage has led to a successful prosecution.

C4 features commissioning editor Katie Boyd ordered the pilot and Dan Barraclough is the executive producer.
