Channel 4 is to bring back controversial doc Benefits Street for a second series as Love Productions starts to research potential locations.

The five-part series drew to a close last night with 4.6m (18.9%) viewers and an average audience of 4.8m (19.6%) across its run - Channel 4’s biggest audience since Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.

A C4 spokesman said the show would return in a fresh location. “The first series ignited an important debate about the welfare system and we are interested in seeing if we can revisit this through the experiences of residents of a street in a different part of Britain,” he said.

Love Productions is currently hunting for potential locations outside of Birmingham.

Next week, C4 is airing half hour special Benefits Street: The Last Word, which will give cast members including matriarch White Dee, the chance to talk about the series. The programme will be followed by Benefits Britain: The Debate, an hour-long live show produced by Mentorn Media and hosted by Richard Bacon.
