Capital FM head of music and programming strategy Jeff Smith has quit the radio group without a job to go to, writes Colin Robertson.

Smith, who has been with the group since June 2000, left last week saying he was 'looking forward to exploring new opportunities'. Both sides insist his departure was amicable.

Capital group programme director Keith Pringle will now oversee Smith's brief - which covers music and programming across Capital's seven stations - until a successor is found. The role, however, will be tweaked slightly to incorporate scheduling, specifically focusing on Capital 95.8 FM in London. Smith's deputy is Ric Blaxill, who joined Capital in February last year.

Smith, who joined Capital from BBC Radio 1 where he was head of music policy, has only handled the head of music and programming strategy brief for 6 months. He was bumped up to the group role from his original position as programme controller for Capital 95.8 FM.
