Granada Kids has been commissioned by Channel 4 to make an adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson's award-winning children's book The Illustrated Mum, and has lined up Michelle Collins to star in it, writes Paul Revoir.

Collins will play Marigold, a tattooed heavy-drinking mother, whose two children have to learn how to cope after she succumbs to mental illness.

The 102-minute one-off drama, produced by Julia Ouston and directed by Cilla Ware, has just gone into production, to air on 5 December as part of C4's 4 Learning output. It "reveals the depth of love and loyalty children feel for their parents and the heartbreaking consequences of having to take on too much responsibility too young", said executive producer Anne Brogan.
