According to unofficial overnight figures from Attentional, the movie peaked with a massive 2.7m (20.1%) at 10.50pm – just in time for the final dancing scene with co-star Jennifer Grey.

No-one put Five in a corner, as the programme was the most watched on the box from 10.30pm to its finish, and unsurprisingly, was particularly popular with females, who made up 66% of the audience.

Earlier in the evening, ITV1 dominated with an unstoppable line up of All Star Family Fortunes, The X Factor and Doc Martin.

All Star Family Fortunes drew 5.3m (26.7%) between 6.45pm and 7.30pm, before the final performances of Boot Camp drew a whopping average of 10.9m (42.5%) to The X Factor to 9pm.

The X Factor peaked at 12.2m (45%) at 8.40pm, just before the final contestants for the judges houses rounds were revealed.

It was streets ahead of every other programme at the time. BBC1’s Antiques Roadshow held up well under the circumstances, with 5.2m (19.9%) for the hour from 8pm, while Last Chance to See drew a respectable 2.1m (7.8%) at the same time.

Elsewhere, C4’s Come Dine With Me was watched by 1.3m (4.8%) with an extra 323,000 (1.4%) watching on C4+1. Five’s Movie Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle attracted 830,000 (3.5%).

At 9pm, Doc Martin killed off Waking the Dead with 7.2m (28.4%) tuning in for the hour, to the BBC1 drama’s 6.2m (24.3%).

Elsewhere across the hour, BBC2’s new series Charlie Boorman: Sydney to Tokyo, By Any Means scored 1.5m (6%) while C4’s Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud’s Grand Tour continued with 1.1m (4.4%). A further 151,000 (1%) watched on C4+1.
