Downton Abbey is leading the way for the Brits at the Golden Globes after picking up four nominations.

The ITV1 drama is in the running to win best TV mini-series, while Elizabeth McGovern and Hugh Bonneville have picked up nominations for best leading actor and actress respectively.

Dame Maggie Smith is also up for best actress in a supporting role, making the Julian Fellowes-penned drama one of the most nominated TV shows at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards.

Downton Abbey is produced by NBC Universal-owned Carnival Film and Television and airs in the US on PBS’s Masterpiece.

Close behind Downton is Kudos Film and Television and BBC America’s The Hour, which has clinched three nominations. These include best TV mini-series and best leading actor nods for Romola Garai and Dominic West.

Meanwhile, BBC2/Showtime comedy Episodes, produced by Hat Trick Productions, is in the running for best comedy or musical. Matt LeBlanc has also been nominated for best actor in a comedy role.

Emily Watson is up for best actress for her turn in ITV1’s Appropriate Adult, while Idris Elba is in the running for the equivalent male gong for his performance in BBC1’s Luther.

Sky acquisitions including Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, The Borgias and Glee have all picked up nominations.

Watson and Smith also picked up US Screen Actors’ Guild nominations, which were unveiled yesterday.
