Speaking as part of the Making My First Film panel at Sheffield Doc Fest, Tash Gaunt said that last summer’s protests meant that the final version of the doc changed significantly from what was initially pitched.

Pinnock’s experience of racism as part of Little Mix formed the basis of Dragonfly’s film and Gaunt followed her to the protests and conducted an unplanned additional interview to “track her emotional journey” to the wider events.

“The BLM protests acted as a feedback loop of what was happening in Leigh-Anne’s personal life,” said Gaunt, adding that including them meant that “the hand of the producer on the film was not quite as obvious”.
