Current TV, the UGC broadcaster backed by Al Gore, has appointed former Sky executive James Baker to lead its UK operation.

Baker has joined Current from investment fund Fleming Media, where he focused on developing new IP opportunities across multiple platforms.

He has been appointed to the newly created role of general manager UK. Current chief operating officer Joanna Drake Earl said his “exceptional passion and diverse experience” made him the best candidate to guide its UK operation.

Baker is a former controller of Sky 1, Sky 2 and Sky 3 and managing director of Sky Networked Media, the satellite company's web, mobile, interactive TV and broadband content division.

Current comprises of Current TV and, and roughly one-third of its on-air content is user generated.
