ITV and Channel 4 neck-and-neck behind BBC – as Sky Arts punches above its weight

BBC2 will be seeking to retain its channel of the year crown against BBC1, Channel 4, Dave, ITV and Sky Arts at the Broadcast Awards 2022.

Sky Arts has been propelled onto the shortlist after receiving five programme category nominations including two shows in the Best Single Drama category, Boys and Romeo & Juliet, and Marina Abramović Takes Over TV up for Best Original Programme.

Across five channels – Sky 1, Arts, Documentaries, Kids and Sports – Sky has picked up a total of 11 nominations.

The BBC leads the field with a cumulative 49 nominations across six channels – BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC News.

It dominates in three categories, picking up five out of the six available noms in Best Children’s Programme, Best Comedy Programme and Best Multichannel Programme.

Channel 5’s kids strand Milkshake similarly dominates the Best Pre-School Programme category, where it has five of the six nominations. C5’s other nomination is for Inside Chernobyl with Ben Fogle in the Best Specialist Factual Programme category.

C4 has 20 nominations including It’s A Sin featuring in the Best Drama Series, and Help and Surviving Covid in the returning Best Lockdown Programme category. It has a triple for Best Daytime Programme, with Steph’s Packed Lunch, Drawers Off and The Great House Giveaway all shortlisted.

C4 is neck-and-neck with ITV, which also has 20 nods across its main channel, ITV2 and CITV. Flicker Productions’ Kate Garraway: Finding Derek is nominated for both Best Lockdown Programme and Best Documentary Programme.

Netflix and Amazon received three and one nod respectively. Netflix’s Too Hot To Handle is up for Best Entertainment Programme, The Surgeon’s Cut for Best Specialist Factual Programme, and Sam Smith: Love Goes – Live at Abbey Road Studios for Best Music Programme, while Amazon’s Clarkson’s Farm is up for Best Popular Factual Programme.

The awards take place on 10 February at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House on Park Lane.
