C4’s thriller Homeland returned for its second series to a similar audience as its debut, fending off competition from heavyweight ITV1 drama Downton Abbey.

The return of the 12 part series featuring the ex CIA analyst drew 1.98m (7.6%), marginally ahead of the opening episode of series one. C4 will be hoping it can beat the first series overnight average of 2.05m (8.1%) notched up in May, according to Barb data provided by Attentional.

It was also ahead of the channel’s 12 month slot average of 1.7m (6.7%).

Downton Abbey (ITV1) 9pm-10pm
9.2m (35.6%) / 318k (1.7%) +1

The fourth episode in the period drama matched the series average of 9.2m (35.8%) as fans continued to be caught up in the escalating plots.

Andrew Marr’s History Of The World (BBC1) 9pm-10pm
2.37m (9%)

The third part of the journalist’s ongoing exploration, which took in Buddhism, the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity, dropped to a series low. The social history remains well below the slot average of 6.1m (23.5%) for the last 12 months.

The X Factor Results Show (ITV1) 8pm-9pm
9.4m (35%) / 190k (0.7%) +1

The exit of Carolynne Poole, the first contestant voted out in the live rounds stage of the talent competition, put the show up on the Sunday series average of 9.1m (34%). It easily took the slot.

Antiques Roadshow (BBC1) 8pm-9pm
5.1m (19%)

Fiona Bruce’s staple hunt for valuables returned with an audience well below the 7, (26%) slot average.

Built In Britain (BBC2) 8pm-9pm
1m (3.8%)

The two-part engineering series fronted by Evan Davis also failed to dent its 1.8m (7%) slot average.

Kevin McCloud’s Man-made Home (C4) 8pm-9pm
1.2m (4.8%)

A below par performance for the third part of the spin-off project from the Grand Designs host, who could not match the 1.4m (4.8%) series average.
