“One of the most driven and resourceful producers I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” is how director Mark Warmington describes James Baxter. The pair collaborated on the Grierson-longlisted feature doc Harder Than the Rock, which follows the UK’s first reggae band, Cimarons, as they stage their final concert. Warmington says James’ “incredible determination to make the film reach the widest possible audience”, including a deal to screen it on Sky, was key to its success.
“From production through to independently distributing the film across more than 80 cinemas and securing major broadcast deals, James consistently went above and beyond.
“He has a rare ability to combine creative instinct with commercial understanding, while always championing the people around him. His energy, leadership and commitment to storytelling make him an exceptional talent.”
James’ production company J6 Films, which he set up in 2008, champions emerging filmmaking talent and has produced music documentaries and videos with the likes of Robbie Williams, Robyn, The Coral and Röyksopp and formed brand partnerships with Adidas, Nike, Nivea and Sony.
He’s also expanded his skillset with the founding of Church Post House, where he worked on feature doc Dolly Parton: In Her Own Words, BBC comedy Where It Ends, 5 drama The Inheritance and Netflix’s The Feud.
James has built his career from the ground up without connections or financial support and has managed his dyslexia and mental health challenges – experiences that, he says, have shaped his resilience, creativity and determination:
“Rather than holding me back, these challenges have driven me to work harder, support others facing similar barriers, and prove that talent and perseverance can create opportunities regardless of background.”
