The Only Way is Essex could be remade in Mumbai, India as the producers continue to explore international options for the format.
A team from All3Media’s Lime Pictures are currently working on a development in India’s most populous city.
The show, if commissioned by an Indian broadcaster, will follow a group of wealthy socialites preoccupied with their appearance and part of a close-knit group of friends.
It is one of a handful of international developments the indie is looking at, including the US.
Earlier this year, Lime creative director Tony Wood said there had been discussions about a potential US remake being set in Florida or Texas. Other territories previously identified as remake locations include Australia, Germany and Finland.
TOWIE is a key brand for ITV2 and is currently in its sixth series.
The commercial broadcaster’s director of digital channels and acquisitions Angela Jain suggested the scheduling may change in the future. It is currently broadcast in Wednesday and Sunday night slots.
Lime also makes MTV’s Geordie Shore, the UK version of Jersey Shore.
