The Banff World Media Festival (Banff) is the latest industry event to be cancelled in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

With the 2020 festival, due to take place in Alberta from 14 – 17 June, no longer taking place, registered delegates will now have the option to transfer their tickets to next year or receive a full refund.

“Cancelling the festival after 41 years of success was not a decision that we took lightly,” said chair of Banff board of directors and Bell Media president Randy Lennox.

“I commend the Banff team and our board for making this tough but necessary call, and I’m confident that the festival will come back better than ever in 2021. Please stay safe everyone.”

Banff’s Rockie Awards International Competition will still take place this year with more details to follow.

“We are not able to gather in person this year, but our team is already working on new ways to connect, inform, inspire and serve our industry,” said festival executive director Jenn Kuzmyk.

“We look forward to working with all of you in the coming months to do just that.”

Earlier this month, Series Mania was cancelled following the French government’s decision to limit gatherings to 1,000 people, while 2020’s Mip TV event was axed just a week before.
