Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny’s leftfield takeover of Welsh football club Wrexham is to be captured in a FX documentary.

Welcome to Wrexham will chronicle the actors’ purchase and steering of the Red Dragons, one of the league’s oldest football teams, and the reaction of its fans.

FX has handed US label Boardwalk Pictures a two-series order to tell the story of how It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star McElhenney and Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds teamed up to buy the club in 2020 with a view to transforming its fortunes.

While the pair lacked any knowledge of football, they shared a serious commitment to their investment in Wrexham.

Welcome to Wrexham is exec produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Nick Frenkel, John Henion and Boardwalk’s Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn and Sarina Roma. It was commissioned by Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Entertainment.

“Rob McElhenney has been an all-star on Team FX for years and now has partnered with the formidable Ryan Reynolds to bring glory to the ‘Red Dragons’ in the docuseries,” said Grad.

“Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club.”
