Debbie O’Malley pens Payback from Jed Mercurio’s HTM Television
Call the Midwife, Humans and Harlots writer Debbie O’Malley is penning an ITV / BritBox thriller from Jed Mercurio’s HTM Television.
The 6 x 60-minute series Payback follows Lexie Noble (Morven Christie), as she becomes entangled in a dangerous police operation to topple a notorious crime lord (Peter Mullan).
Noble, who lives an idyllic suburban life in Edinburgh, is unaware that her husband has been laundering the gangster’s money and is being scrutinized by investigators.
As the police net tightens around the family, Noble becomes forced to work with her husband and treading a treacherous tightrope.
HTM creative director and Trigger Point exec Jed Mercurio will exec Payback alongside the indie’s Madonna Baptiste and BritBox’s Diederick Santer.
The directors are Jennie Darnell (Trigger Point, Line of Duty) and Andrew Cumming (Clique, The Origin) with producer Eric Coulter (The Control Room).
The show was ordered by ITV head of drama Polly Hill who said: “Payback is a brilliant thriller which questions how well you know your partner and as the secrets come out, asks who you can trust. Debbie has written compelling scripts that will keep the audience hooked and surprised.”
O’Malley added: “Following our ordinary wife and mother through the loopholes and increasingly grey areas of fiscal malpractice, into the murky world of organised crime, Payback poses the disconcerting question: just how far might any of us go, if we thought we could get away with it?”
The drama will be filmed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
