Channel 4 has commissioned Immigration Street from Love Productions in addition to the indie working to deliver series two of Benefits Street.

Benefits Street

Immigration Street (w/t) has been commissioned for a 6 x 60-minute run to air in early 2015. It focuses on the residents of Derby Road in Southampton, where most of the residents were not born in the UK.

C4 head of documentaries Nick Mirsky ordered the series, and Love’s Kieran Smith will executive produce.

Mirsky said: “Immigration is clearly an emotive issue dominating British politics and debates right now. Although the experience of the changes brought about by immigration will be different from place to place, we expect many of the themes that emerge from following life on Derby Road will resonate across the country.”

Smith added: “Immigration is one of the most keenly debated subjects in the UK and it is incredibly important that we reflect the honest experiences of people who have settled in the UK and come to consider it as home.”

Immigration Street fits with chief creative officer Jay Hunt’s message at Broadcast’s Commissioning and Funding Forum about the broadcaster seeking programmes which engage viewers in “the national conversation” in the run-up towards the 2015 general election.

Love Productions has also been greenlit by C4 to follow-up 2012’s Make Bradford British with a focus on multicultural Leicester, and is working on a follow up to controversial ratings smash Benefits Street.

Creative Richard McKerrow hinted at Sheffiled DocFest that Love had secured access to a street for the second series.
